Tunisia has taken a major step in the fight against child sexual abuse online. By launching a new reporting portal, citizens across the country can now safely, securely, and anonymously report child sexual abuse material online. This portal, which was created by the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), was the 29th to be funded by the End Violence Partnership since 2017.

“The dedication of the Tunisian Government and partners resulted in the portal being launched in record time,” said Dr Howard Taylor, the Executive Director of the End Violence Partnership. “Thanks to this effort, anyone in Tunisia can now anonymously report online sexual images or videos of children directly on the portal.”

Available in both French and Arabic, the portal – which can be accessed here – is the first of its kind in Tunisia. Once flagged through the new portal, images and videos will be assessed by trained analysts from the IWF in the United Kingdom, and if they are found to contain child sexual abuse, they will be blocked and removed from the internet.

“The launch of this reporting portal fighting against images and videos of child sexual abuse in Tunisia will play an essential role in breaking the chain of silence around sexual violence on children and their dramatic consequences,” said Mr Chokri Maatoug, General Director for Childhood at Tunisia’s Ministry of Women, Family and the Elderly.

This is the 47th portal to be launched by the IWF and the 23rd to be established in Africa. It is also the fourth portal to be launched through funding from the End Violence Partnership in 2021 alone; over the past six months, portals have also been launched in Kenya, Morocco and Guatemala. IWF Portals are available in countries all around the world in 17 languages, including Arabic, English, French, Hindi, Indonesian, Kazakh, Lingala, Malaysian Bahasa, Mongolian, Nepali, Pashto, Portuguese, Spanish, Swahili, Ukrainian, Urdu, and Wolof.

With our partners in Tunisia, we can make sure this material is found and removed effectively, preventing the continued revictimization of these children.

“This new portal in Tunisia is a major step forward because it means there are now fewer places for these criminals to share these videos and images,” said Susie Hargreaves OBE, the Chief Executive Officer of the Internet Watch Foundation. “With our partners in Tunisia, we can make sure this material is found and removed effectively, preventing the continued revictimization of these children.”
