The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute

Established by the Secretary-General in 1967 in accordance with Resolution 1086 B (XXXIX) of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) provides assistance to intergovernmental, governmental and nongovernmental organizations in their efforts to formulate and implement improved policies in the fields of crime prevention and justice.

In order to do so and confront the evolving array of traditional and emerging threats, UNICRI adopts a multi-sectoral and holistic approach, incorporating applied and action-oriented research, exchange and dissemination of knowledge and advocacy, training, field activities and the creation of strong partnerships as integral components. UNICRI’s strategic priorities are particularly aligned with Goal 16 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which is focused on the promotion of peaceful and inclusive societies, access to justice and building effective and accountable institutions, as well as Goals 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 11, 14 and 15.

UNICRI's headquarters are located on the United Nations Campus in Turin, Italy and it also maintains Liaison Offices in Rome, Geneva and New York, as well as several thematically project offices around the world, including a specialized Centre for AI and Robotics in The Hague. UNICRI reports periodically to ECOSOC through the United Nations Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ).
